Tom Morello and The Edge as Hendrix

"Yeah well Hendrix is dead."
So said my friend as we debated vigorously about the state of innovation in the world of rock guitar playing. Back in the late sixties, you had a four headed Hydra with Iommi(Sabbath), Alvin Lee(Ten Years After), Page(Zep) and Jimi. In the 80's, you had Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. The 90's brought a riff fest with Steve Vai and Eric Johnson duking it out for supremacy. And now ??? To be charitable, there are amazing players out there right now like Guthrie Govan, and Johnny Hiland, but there aren't really any earth shattering soundscapes/change your life kind of tones being created anymore. Well, not if you don't count Tom Morello and The Edge(aka Dave Edmunds). Back in 1993, i remember hearing the first Rage Against The Machine album and being truly confounded about how he was getting his guitar sounds he utilized on his solos. He thought about the guitar differently. Not only was he trying to "rock out", he was also trying to see what alien sounds could be coaxed from the tools he had at his disposal. Which as he claims are only "a few greasy old effects pedals." One of the main conponents of his sound was the digitech whammy pedal. With this pedal you could produce strange and wonderful clusters of notes not otherwise available without the effect. You could also achieve pitches 2 and 3 octaves higher than the highest note on a regular guitar and then manipulate the pedal part of the effect to tremolo or "whammy" that note to produce an otherworldly alien texture. Now the Edge has been doing his thing since approx 1979. What really set him apart was/is his innovative use of analog and digital delay. He is able to record multiple tracks of guitars and put varying degrees of delay on them and have them all magically sync up. He is basically the master f clean tones the world over. He also creates landscapes of sound with volume swells and clanging chorus effects. I feel all this qualifies Morello and The Edge as two of the most innovative guitarists since Jimi Hendrix.
Please Debate!
I would love to hear your thoughts.
